Dazzle

Glare from the low autumn sun can be a real problem. Here’s how to improve your vision:

  • Clean your windscreen inside and out to remove the hazy film that builds up.
  • Sort out glass scratches and chips – they can intensify the sun’s glare.
  • Replace your wiper blades if they’re worn, damaged, or more than a couple of years old.
  • Use a screen wash additive that’s made for the job – check the handbook if you’re not sure where to top it up.
  • Keep a pair of sunglasses in your car and use the sun visors.
  • Slow down if you’re dazzled.
  • Use headlights to help others see you.

Remember:

  • If the suns behind you, it’s in the eyes of those coming towards you.
  • If the suns in your eyes, it’s probably blinding drivers following you too.

Batteries

Batteries generally last around five years. If there’s any sign that your battery’s struggling now, it’s likely to let you down during the winter when it’s colder. Replace it now to avoid hassle later.

  • Regular Checks: Inspect your battery terminals for any signs of corrosion. If you spot any, clean them to maintain a strong connection.
  • Battery Health: We can test your battery to ensure it’s holding a proper charge—just ask us, and we’ll check it for you.
  • Secure Placement: Ensure the battery is tightly fastened to prevent vibrations that could lead to damage.
  • Avoid Short Trips: Frequent short drives may stop your battery from fully charging. Try combining errands to give it enough time to recharge.
  • Switch Off Accessories: Before you turn off your car, double-check that all accessories, like lights and the radio, are off to avoid draining the battery.

Bulbs

Check your lights every few weeks throughout the year, but especially as autumn starts and we head into the darker months. Your handbook shows how to change a bulb, but we can easily change headlight ones. Here are several tips to keep you well informed.

  1. Regular Checks: Inspect your car lights every few weeks, especially as the days get shorter. This includes headlights, brake lights, fog lights, and even number plate lights.
  2. Replace in Pairs: If one bulb goes out, it’s a good idea to replace both on the same side. This ensures consistent light quality and can save you time in the long run.
  3. Clean Lenses: Keep the lenses of your lights clean. Dirt and grime can reduce the effectiveness of your lights, making it harder to see and be seen.
  4. Upgrade Bulbs: Consider upgrading to higher performance bulbs for better visibility. There are many options available that offer brighter and longer-lasting light.
  5. Check Alignment: Ensure your headlights are properly aligned. Misaligned headlights can reduce visibility and dazzle other drivers.
  6. Carry Spares: Keep spare bulbs in your car. This way, you can quickly replace a bulb if it goes out while you’re on the road

Tyres

We recommend at least 3mm of tread for the winter, so if yours is getting low, buy new tyres now before the cold sets in.

  1. Inspect Tyre Condition: Look for any cuts, bulges, or signs of wear. Damaged tyres can be dangerous, especially in adverse weather conditions.
  2. Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure: Cold weather can cause tyre pressure to drop. Check your tyre pressure regularly and keep it at the recommended level.
  3. Consider All-Weather Tyres: If you frequently drive in wet or icy conditions, consider switching to all-weather or winter tyres for better performance.
  4. Rotate Your Tyres: Regularly rotating your tyres can ensure even wear and extend their lifespan.
  5. Avoid Overloading: Carrying too much weight can put extra stress on your tyres, leading to faster wear and potential blowouts.

  • Check Your Heater and Defroster: Ensure your car’s heater and defroster are working properly to keep your windows clear.
  • Prepare for Night-Time Driving: With shorter days, you’ll be driving in the dark more often. Make sure all your lights are working and practice driving in the dark if you’re not confident.
  • Increase Following Distance: Autumn weather can be unpredictable. Increase the distance between you and the car in front to allow more time to react to sudden stops.
  • Beware of Fog: Fog can reduce visibility significantly. Use your fog lights and drive slowly.
  • Look Out for Wildlife: Animals are more active during autumn, especially deer. Be extra cautious in areas where wildlife is common
  • Keep an Emergency Kit: Include items like a blanket, flashlight, first aid kit, and some non-perishable snacks in case you get stranded.
  • Check Your Exhaust System: Ensure there are no leaks, as these can be dangerous, especially when driving with windows closed.
